As a magnolia tree ages, it develops deeper roots and grows stronger and taller. The same can be said of the 30th Annual Magnolia Run, as the event has grown stronger and more successful each year, raising $122,834 (with more donations coming in daily!). The roots feeding this growth are the more than 1500 participants and 79 amazing teams that took part in the run/walk. The teams are made up of families, friends, co-workers and classmates, all walking/running in honor or memory of a person with epilepsy.

The event had a festive atmosphere, as teams wore t-shirts in a rainbow of colors. Adding to the family fun were lots of great local vendors, like Dog City Bakery, Yogurt Mountain, Orange Theory Fitness, Big Peach Running Company, Allstate Hackworth Agency and more! There were plenty of fun activities, including inflatables, face & hair painting, games and a visit by Atlanta’s favorite mascots – Freddie Falcon & the Chick-fil-A cows! As always, local food vendors donated a veritable buffet for participants who had worked up an appetite after completing the 5k run or the 1 mile walk.

In addition to the fun and fund-raising, the Magnolia Run plays an important role in educating the public about epilepsy and creating greater awareness of the disorder. This year, the Magnolia Run was selected by WSB-TV’s Family to Family project. Their support played a major role in this endeavor through the promotional segment done prior to the race, spotlighting on their website and the support and coverage on the day of the race! EFGA was also fortunate to have many vendors spotlighting epilepsy-related services in the metro area. Signs along the race route also shared information and dispelled many common myths about epilepsy.

The event concluded with an awards ceremonies recognizing the overall and top 3 finishers in each age group for the 5k race, as well as the top teams in funds raised. In truth, all the teams and race participants are winners, as their efforts will enable the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia to reach out and serve more of the 150,000 Peach State residents who have a seizure disorder.

The top 5 fundraising team for the 2013 Magnolia Run and Walk for Epilepsy are:
$11,630 – Sprinting for Seizures
$8,475 – Team Griffin
$6,300 – Team KatieCakes
$5,385 – Sarah’s Team

We also want to mention and thank our wonderful corporate teams for their fundraising efforts:
